MILL VALLEY

Mill Valley has it all: redwood forests, waterfront proximity, and a vibrant downtown filled with acclaimed restaurants, live music, and boutique shops — all just minutes from San Francisco and the Pacific coast. Sophisticated yet deeply outdoorsy, it blends small-town charm with an elevated lifestyle, where world-class dining and trailheads into California's most breathtaking wilderness are equally within reach.

Mill Valley

Community Type: Small City / Town   Population: ~14,000

Vibe: Sophisticated, outdoorsy, artsy, walkable downtown

Mill Valley sits at the foot of Mount Tamalpais and is one of Marin's most beloved towns. Downtown — 'the Depot' — is a lively plaza of restaurants, bookshops, boutiques, and coffee houses. The community has a strong arts identity, hosting the Mill Valley Film Festival each fall, and the trails into the redwoods begin steps from town.

Neighborhoods & Character

Downtown Mill Valley is the social and commercial heart. The surrounding neighborhoods climb into the hills, offering privacy and views. Cascade Canyon and Tamalpais neighborhoods sit close to open space. Summit and Edgewood are quieter and more wooded. Shelter Ridge and Homestead Valley offer a bit more elbow room without leaving the town limits.

Amenities

Full-service downtown with grocery, pharmacy, banks, yoga studios, excellent restaurants, and independent shops. Good schools (Mill Valley School District). Easy Hwy 101 access and the Sausalito ferry connection to San Francisco.

Nature & Outdoor Access

Immediate trailhead access to Mt. Tamalpais State Park — hundreds of miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Muir Woods National Monument is minutes away. Close to Stinson Beach and Tennessee Valley Beach. Old Mill Park has redwood groves and a creek.

Things to Consider

Mill Valley is one of Marin's pricier markets. Expect competition and a premium on anything with views or walkability. There is traffic on Miller Avenue during commute hours. Fog can be persistent in summer — the marine layer is part of life here and some find it refreshing while others find it relentless.
